About this role
Job Title: Model-Based Systems Engineer (Data Engineering)
Job Description
We are seeking a Model-Based Systems Engineer with a strong foundation in data engineering principles to join a dynamic team working on complex, data-driven systems. In this role, you apply model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies to analyze, trace, and align intricate data requirements between government and client systems. You operate at the intersection of systems modeling and data architecture, ensuring that data flows, transformations, and system behaviors are accurately represented, validated, and communicated to stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain MBSE models that represent data pipelines, data flows, and system interactions, enabling traceability between government and client requirements and System Component Specification Models (CSMs), with a focus on data ingestion, transformation, storage, and access layers.
- Identify gaps between data-related requirements and system components, particularly in areas involving data integration, ETL processes, and schema alignment, and recommend solutions to close those gaps.
- Conduct standalone analysis projects involving data lineage, metadata management, and system interoperability to support robust and transparent data architectures.
- Reconcile discrepancies between different sets of data requirements, ensuring data quality, consistency, and compliance across multiple systems and interfaces.
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to communicate insights related to data architecture, system interfaces, and information models in a clear and accessible manner.
- Manage multiple projects involving data-centric system models, prioritizing tasks and ensuring timely delivery with high technical accuracy.
- Apply MBSE best practices to support continuous improvement of data modeling, system specification, and requirements management processes.
- Support the integration of avionics or mission systems data, focusing on data exchange, telemetry, and distributed data architectures where applicable.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Systems Engineering, Data Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 3+ years of experience in MBSE modeling, including exposure to data-centric system design and requirements analysis.
- Proficiency in Cameo Systems Modeler or similar MBSE tools for building and maintaining system models.
- Experience with requirements analysis and traceability within complex, data-driven systems.
- Familiarity with data modeling concepts, including entity-relationship modeling, data dictionaries, and data governance practices.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data flows and system interactions clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Analytical mindset with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving data integration and modeling challenges.
- Experience working with ETL processes and data engineering principles.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment involving systems engineering and data engineering.
- Attention to detail when documenting models, requirements, and data specifications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with data pipelines, ETL tools, or data orchestration frameworks such as Apache NiFi or Airflow.
- Familiarity with data standards and certification processes, including frameworks such as ISO 8000 and other data compliance standards.
- Knowledge of avionics or mission systems, with a focus on data exchange, telemetry, and integration of flight or mission data.
- Experience with networked systems, Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), or distributed data architectures.
- Experience in data engineering for complex, safety-critical or regulated systems.
- Experience collaborating with government or regulated industry stakeholders on data and systems requirements.
- Ability to contribute to continuous improvement of MBSE practices and tooling within a team environment.
Work Environment
This role is based onsite at an advanced aerospace and defense facility in Fort Worth, Texas. You work in a highly technical, collaborative environment alongside systems engineers, data engineers, and domain experts focused on complex, mission-critical systems.
